Mark & Alex's Wedding - Styal Lodge Wedding Venue, Cheshire
My baby brother Mark and sister-in-law Alex celebrated their amazing wedding at the purpose-built wedding-venue Styal Lodge in Cheshire on the outskirts of Manchester.
I speak to lots of other photographers about lots of other things, but one thing I stand by that always gets me funny looks is that I'd rather be the photographer at a wedding than a guest, even my own brother's wedding. There are many reasons for this.
First and foremost, I love my job. I truly do. Since starting to take photography seriously several years ago, the way I view the world and use my eyes has completely changed. Everything I look at gets mentally framed and assessed, to see if I can figure out how to make boring, everyday objects visually interesting. I am also constantly assessing different sources of light, their strengths and weaknesses, benefits and possible uses.
And so the thought of just sitting back and watching another snapper take pictures of all the people I care most about, whilst I don't touch my camera, is just a complete non-starter. There is no way I'd be able to witness all these great picture opportunities that happen constantly at weddings and have to rely on someone else to see and capture them. No, my camera and lens stays in my hands.
This picture in particular was taken after their beautiful ceremony was complete, and the formal family pictures were already in the bag, so to speak. The happy couple actually took a short golf-buggy ride to get to this quaint little lake, and I think it was well worth the effort.
If I may be so immodest, there are several elements I like about this image....its (almost) symmetrical, its vibrant, I like the reeds on the edges pointing towards the bride and groom, I like the interesting cloud structures and the blueness of the sky, I love the bride's wedding dress and I like the simplicity of just holding hands.
