The Call-Up (Aliyah)
The call-up is at the heart of the Bar Mitzvah - a moment of pride, meaning, and tradition.
I approach this part of the day with care and respect, working within the specific guidelines of each synagogue. Every shul is different, and understanding how to photograph sensitively in these environments is essential.
Rather than interrupting or directing, I focus on what’s already there:
The quiet concentration.
The supportive presence of family.
The subtle exchanges of pride and reassurance.
These are the moments that matter…and the ones that stay with you
The Rehearsal
The rehearsal is often one of the most relaxed and rewarding parts of the entire experience - and one that many families overlook.
Without the pressure of the main service, your child has space to feel comfortable and confident. It’s an ideal opportunity to capture:
Natural moments at the bimah
Details that might not be possible during the ceremony
Formal family photographs in Shabbat clothes
A sense of calm before the celebration
Photographing the rehearsal allows us to create meaningful images in a quieter, more flexible setting - adding depth to the overall story of the day.
Portraits
Family photos matter…but they don’t need to feel staged or stressful.
I keep portrait sessions simple, efficient, and relaxed, so you can get the images you want without losing time with your guests.
This includes:
Individual portraits of your child
Immediate and extended family group photos
Natural, in-between moments that feel genuine
I’ll guide things where needed, but the goal is always the same…photographs that feel like real people, not posed versions of them.
The Party
Once the formalities are over, the celebration begins.
From the first entrance to the last dance, the party is full of energy, laughter, and connection - and this is where a documentary approach really comes into its own.
I capture:
The atmosphere you’ve created
Speeches and reactions
Dance floor moments and spontaneous interactions
Guests of all ages enjoying the celebration
Rather than directing events, I blend into the background, allowing everything to unfold naturally while making sure nothing important is missed.
Details & Traditions
A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is rich with meaning…and often it’s the smaller details that help tell the full story.
From the Torah and tallit to carefully chosen decorations and personal touches, these elements bring depth and individuality to the celebration.
I photograph:
Religious and ceremonial details
Décor and styling
Meaningful objects and keepsakes
Connections between generations
These images help tie everything together, creating a complete and lasting record of the occasion
A Calm, Documentary Approach
Every Bar or Bat Mitzvah is different…but the way I work remains consistent.
Calm. Observant. Unobtrusive.
I don’t stage moments or interrupt the natural flow of the day. Instead, I focus on capturing what’s already happening - the real interactions, the genuine eмоtions, the moments you might not even notice at the time.
With experience across a range of synagogues and celebrations, I understand how to move quietly, anticipate key moments, and work seamlessly alongside your plans.
The result is photography that feels natural, respectful, and true to the day.
