Event Photography for the Manchester University Law Society Summer Ball at Peckforton Castle
As a Manchester event photographer, I regularly photograph gala dinners, awards ceremonies, university events and black-tie celebrations across the North West. One recent event took me to the spectacular Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, where I photographed the Manchester University Law Society Summer Ball.
This year's event embraced a colourful A Midsummer Night's Dream theme, transforming the castle into a vibrant setting filled with theatrical details, elegant décor and plenty of opportunities for memorable event photography. With beautiful summer weather, a drinks reception on the lawn, a three-course dinner and a packed dancefloor later in the evening, it was a fantastic event to document.
A Stunning Venue for Event Photography
Peckforton Castle is one of the most impressive event venues in the North West and provided an incredible backdrop for the evening.
The dramatic architecture, vaulted ceilings, grand dining rooms and historic interiors created a sense of occasion from the moment guests arrived. As an event photographer, venues like Peckforton Castle offer endless opportunities to capture both the scale of an event and the atmosphere that makes it unique.
Before guests arrived, I spent time photographing the venue, room layouts and themed details that helped bring the evening's A Midsummer Night's Dream concept to life.
A Midsummer Night's Dream Theme
The event organisers had fully embraced the theme, with colourful draping, dramatic lighting, themed décor and playful Shakespeare-inspired touches throughout the venue.
One of the standout features was a life-sized Shakespeare cut-out that proved popular throughout the evening, while the bold colours and theatrical styling helped create a distinctive atmosphere that ran through every part of the event.
Photographing these details is an important part of event coverage, helping organisers preserve the work that goes into creating a memorable guest experience.
Drinks Reception on the Lawn
With clear skies and warm weather, guests were able to enjoy a relaxed drinks reception on the lawns outside the castle before dinner.
The outdoor setting provided a perfect opportunity for natural photographs of guests arriving, catching up with friends and enjoying the surroundings before the formal part of the evening began.
These moments often produce some of the strongest event photographs because they capture genuine interactions and reactions without the structure of the main programme.
Capturing the Atmosphere
While some events are heavily focused on presentations or awards, this summer ball was designed primarily as a celebration.
There were only a couple of brief speeches before dinner, allowing guests to spend most of the evening socialising and enjoying the occasion. This created plenty of opportunities for candid event photography, with the focus remaining on the people, the atmosphere and the experience of the event itself.
My approach throughout the evening was to work unobtrusively, documenting the event as it unfolded while capturing authentic moments and natural interactions.
Gala Dinner Photography
Guests were then seated across three separate dining rooms within the castle for a three-course meal.
Photographing a large-scale dinner spread across multiple rooms requires careful planning to ensure every part of the event is documented consistently. Alongside photographs of guests enjoying the evening, I also captured room details, table styling and the overall atmosphere created by the themed décor.
The combination of historic architecture and colourful styling made for particularly striking photographs throughout dinner.
Evening Entertainment and Dancing
As dinner came to an end, attention turned to the dancefloor.
The colourful theme continued into the evening entertainment, with dramatic lighting, lively music and a packed dancefloor creating a completely different atmosphere from the earlier parts of the event.
These celebrations provided some of the most energetic photographs of the night, capturing the excitement and enjoyment that make events like this so memorable.
Event Photography for University Balls, Gala Dinners and Black-Tie Events
The Manchester University Law Society Summer Ball was a fantastic example of how creative event design, a stunning venue and great guests can come together to create an unforgettable evening.
